I am just finishing an article by Jacque Ellul called Violence: Reflections from a Christian Perspective. In it, he speaks about the fact that in our world violence is a “necessity”, by which he means that it is a “law” and therefore has it’s own “rules” similar to how gravity works.
I decided to post a couple sections below that illustrate how the “law” of violence works according to his research. He, surprisingly for me, does not come down on the side of nonviolence but rather points to the fact that if we are to support violence we must do so thoughtfully, not simplistically. We should understand what we are doing and what comes next … but in no way should we do so under the guise of it being the “Christian” thing to do; it is most definitely not.
